Foundation Design and Construction Considerations on Expansive Soils
Expansive soils present significant challenges for foundation design and construction due to their propensity for significant volume changes with moisture fluctuations. This two hour workshop aims to provide a comprehensive overview of key considerations in designing and constructing foundations on expansive soils, focusing on soil characterization, potential heave estimation, distress pattern recognition, and preventive measures. Understanding the nature and origin of expansive soils, typically rich in smectite clay minerals and prevalent in arid regions, is essential. Preventive measures, including soil treatment, selecting suitable foundation types, efficient drainage systems, and moisture barriers, are crucial for mitigating the adverse effects of expansive soils. This workshop will provide practical insights and case studies, equipping attendees with the knowledge to effectively address the challenges posed by expansive soils and ensure the longevity and stability of structures.
